How does it work?

Like all L'Arche Communities we've started small with one house of people with and without learning disabilities living together. Our future plans include additional houses. For some people may provide a home for life; others will gain the skills and confidence to live in their own accommodation with a lower level of support.

Why is it needed?

There comes a time in most people's lives when they want to leave home and become independent. Many people with learning disabilities are unable to do this without help. Others will have parents too elderly to continue caring for them or who cannot manage for other reasons.

Person-centred

We are committed to a person-centred approach. This means that we listen to the differing needs, likes and dislikes of the individual to learn how he or she wants to live. Together we draw up a plan that sets out what needs to be done and who needs to be involved to ensure that every member can lead their life in their way.

Working as an assistant can be appealing to gap year students and people looking for a career change, as well as to anyone seeking a challenging and rewarding life. It is more than a just a job. L'Arche assistants commit to sharing their lives with people who need support, in a setting where everyone learns from one another.
